7+ Weirdest Freshwater Fish For Conservation and Education

In this blog, we’re focusing on larger U.S. species as opposed to the multitude of small and colorful freshwater fish that exist globally include weirdest freshwater fish. We’ve chosen these five large species because we want to show that there are still plenty of animals – which we don’t know much about – swimming around in the water. Then I purposefully selected lesser-known species and subspecies of familiar game fish. It is not uncommon for people to be unaware of the diversity of different kinds of fish, even trout and bass which are common. But this imperiled diversity still exists.

Chiselmouth

Some freshwater fish have downright strange and unfortunate names, like Chiselmouth. However, for descriptive purposes, this fish really does have a chisel mouth. The chiselmouth’s lower jaw has a distinctive line of cartilage that it used to slice off pieces of food for swallowing. The book has noted that these fish scrape their lower jaw over rocks & other surfaces with short, quick movements of about 1 inch. It is then ingested by the fish.

The hardheads are part of the Cyprinidae family, the group of fish known as minnows. Despite their name, they are nothing like typical minnows. They can measure up to two feet in size and will go after zooplankton and algae as well as other food sources near the surface.

The blue sucker is a spectacular fish. Its sickle-shaped dorsal fine and torpedo like body make it perfectly adapted to rapid currents, the habitat it requires. It migrates upstream on rivers and congregates in large numbers to spawn.

Bigmouth Buffalo

Another fish that has an identity crisis. Many people confuse it with the carp, a non-native species. But big mouth buffalo are native to the area. And there’s more at stake than just mistaken identity.Recent research has found that bigmouth buffalo can live more than 100 years. They breed intermittently rather than annually and this makes them vulnerable to overharvest, as the largest females tend to be harvested.

Hornyhead Chub

Name aside, hornyhead chubs are important for stream ecosystems in the Midwest. They clear out a gravel redd for spawning. This gravel is used not only by the chub, but by a number of other species as well. This is true for other chubs. The bluehead chub of the Southeast United States is a true ecosystem engineer, an unappreciated species that contributes significantly to biodiversity. Look for a feature on the bluehead chub in an upcoming feature on Cool Green Science.

Sacramento Perch

There are over 100 varieties of sunfish, some of which will be recognized by most North American anglers. These include the bluegill, black crappie and largemouth bass. Many sunfish species have been introduced around the world, but even among those a number of species are poorly known. While people moved bass into the Sacramento perch’s habitat, they transported the Sacramento perch to other waterways. They have been introduced to Colorado, Nebraska and other states but most of these introductions have not been successful. However, several of the lakes and rivers in California and surrounding states still have stable or even thriving populations of the Sacramento perch.

Redeye Bass

Why is there a bass on this list? We all know what a bass is, right? It’s true that weirdest freshwater fish or largemouth and smallmouth bass are the most popular sports fish in America. But there are many other types of bass, too – for me the habits and habitat of these other basses have been interes

North America is home to many lakes that are isolated from other waterways, which has led to the evolution of species that only exist in these remote regions. This makes them particularly vulnerable to invasive species and other problems that can be difficult for humans to address. As such, endemic species in lakes are often threatened with extinction.

Willow-Whitehorse Cutthroat

Considered by trout expert Robert Behnke to be a separate subspecies and by others to be stream-form of the Lahontan cutthroat, then describe about weirdest freshwater fish, this fish is only found in a few isolated desert waters. Trout are typically stocked around the globe. They are typically about a foot long, with a deep pink color, and make for great sport fishing. Trout used to be native to North America, but their populations have been greatly depleted in recent decades. Beautiful native trout species and subspecies have disappeared as a result of the introduction of hatchery rainbow trout, brook trout and brown trout.
